Baseball in Boise is finally here. The 2015 Boise Hawks season begins today after an offseason that featured some of the most substantial changes in franchise history.
During the winter months, the Hawks were graced with a new major league affiliate, purchased by a new ownership group and Memorial Stadium went through its biggest renovation since opening in 1989.
Things got rolling on September 23, when the Colorado Rockies officially agreed to become the new major league affiliate of the Hawks. The Rockies are the third MLB affiliate in Hawks history and geographically the closest affiliate the Hawks have had.
“We need to recognize the regionality and show how important that is,” said Rockies GM Jeff Bridich at the press conference announcing the deal. “The relationships have an opportunity to be special.”
On January 7, the Hawks organization was met with more big news when Agon Sports & Entertainment officially purchased the team.
Today begins a new era of baseball in Boise, said Agon President Jeff Eiseman on the day the sale was finalized. “We do not plan to sit idle until the season. We will immediately be active in the community and making investments into Memorial Stadium and the game-day experience for our fans this season and beyond.”
Eiseman stayed true to his word and beyond as Memorial Stadium underwent the most extensive facelift in stadium history.
Some of the stadium improvements include new spectra netting, an enhanced sound system, new seats, improved playing surface, new ballpark signage and a newly remodeled and renamed, Coors Light Purple Porch.
“The Hawks have never been through an offseason like this before,” said Todd Rahr, team president. “We’re excited for our guests to see the new ballpark and enjoy some Hawks baseball!”
The Hawks take on the Tri-City Dust Devils in game one of a five game series, tonight at 7:15 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
