Several former Boise Hawks players have made big headlines in the MLB this week. Here's a look at what happened:
Wellington Castillo was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher, Yoervis Medina. Castillo played parts of six seasons with the Cubs and hit for an average of .252 with 29 home runs and 110 RBI's. Castillo spent three games with the Hawks in 2006 and hit .167 scoring one run on one hit in six at bats.
Atlanta Braves right-hander Shelby Miller had a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning against the Miami Marlins when former Hawk, Justin Bour smacked a first pitch pinch-hit single. It would have been the first no-hitter of Miller's career and the first in the MLB this season. Bour spent 48 games with the Hawks during the 2009 season, hitting for an average of .248 while amassing two home runs, 27 RBI's and 47 hits.
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher and former Hawk, Sean Marshall was informed this week that he will again require season ending shoulder surgery. In 2014, Marshall made only 15 appearances before requiring shoulder surgery. Marshall played in 14 games with the Hawks in 2013 and posted a 2.57 ERA with five wins and 88 strikeouts.
The day after getting the walk off hit in an extra innings win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, former Hawk and current Chicago Cub, Matt Szczur was sent down to Triple-A. Following the 12 inning victory, the Cubs recalled right-hander Brian Schlitter to supplement their overused bullpen and Szczur was the unfortunate roster casualty. The 25-year-old Szczur played in 18 games with the Hawks in 2010, hitting for an average of .397 with 29 hits and 8 RBI's.
