BOISE, Idaho - The Boise Hawks defeated the Eugene Emeralds, 4-2 on Tuesday night behind the strong pitching performance of newly acquired, Logan Sawyer.
The Hawks struck early, plating one run in the first inning off a pass ball by Emeralds catcher, Tyler Alamo. It was the first time this season the Hawks had scored the first run in a game.
After chasing Emeralds starting pitcher, Adbert Alzolay, former Hawks pitcher, Greyfer Eregua entered to start the third inning and proceeded to give up three runs.
Max George got things started with a one out double, his second of the game and third extra base hit in the last two games. George took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Hamlet Marte RBI single.
Brian Mundell then reached on a fielding error after battling through a 10-pitch at bat. Mundell and Marte completed a successful double steal before Kevin Padlo ripped a bases clearing single to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
That was more than enough run support for Sawyer, who was added to the Hawks roster today after landing in Boise and taking the long bus ride to Eugene last night.
Sawyer, previously a starter for the Asheville Tourists, pitched seven strong innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out 11 while picking up the win.
Taylor Black entered and pitched two and one third innings and secured the save as the Hawks improved to 3-3 on the season.
The Hawks will face the Emeralds in game two of this three game series tomorrow night at PK Park in Eugene.
