Boise, Idaho – In front of a standing room only crowd at Memorial Stadium, the Boise Hawks fell to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes by a score of 7-6, dropping the three game series.
Colin Welmon took the mound for the Hawks and gave up two first inning runs on a Jose Vizciano RBI single and a C.J Hinojosa RBI sacrifice fly. Welmon settled down and pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
The Hawks responded in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back doubles from Brian Carroll and Carlos Herrera, tightening the score at 2-1.
The Volcanoes added one run on an RBI single from Shilo McCall before the Hawks plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Scott Burcham led off with a single to left field before Brian Carroll reached on a bunt single with both runners advancing on an errant throw to first base. Herrera then delivered a two RBI single to right field that tied the game at three and chased Volcanoes starting pitcher Nicholas Gonzalez.
Yonathan Daza welcomed Volcanoes pitcher Ryan Hernandez in to the game with an RBI single and later scored on an error during a Kevin Padlo stolen base attempt, giving the Hawks a 5-3 lead.
Hernandez picked up the win, pitching two innings while giving up one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
In this back-and-forth game, it was the Volcanoes turn to take the lead as they responded with four runs of their own in the top of the seventh. A couple of walks and a couple of hit batters scored one run and loaded the bases for Miguel Gomez, who delivered a bases clearing double to make the score 7-5.
Cesar Villarroel took the loss for the Hawks, going one and one third of an inning, giving up four runs on one hit with three walks.
The Hawks (6-10) got one run back in the bottom of the eighth on a Herrara RBI single but could not complete the comeback as they dropped the rubber match of the three game series by a score of 7-6. The Hawks will travel to Spokane to face the Indians in a five game series starting tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 8:30 p.m.
Notes: Carlos Herrera drove in a season-high four runs… Yonathan Daza held on to his league leading .404 batting average… The Hawks dropped their first game of the season while wearing their purple uniforms.
