Boise, Idaho - The Hawks threatened in the ninth and tenth innings but could not pull out the win as they fell to the Vancouver Canadians in 12 innings on Wednesday night by a score of 5-4.
The Hawks kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, putting together a two-out rally highlighted by RBI hits from Brian Mundell and Hamlet Marte.
The Canadians put up one run in the top of the second inning before Steven Leonard smashed an RBI double high off the left field wall in the bottom half of the inning to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
That score held until the sixth inning when Sean Hurley hit a bases clearing three-run double to give the Canadians their first lead at 4-3.
Marte slapped an RBI single in the seventh inning off Canadians reliever, Sean Ratcliffe, tying the game at 4-4.
The Hawks threatened in the ninth but were turned away as Marte was thrown out at home plate trying to score on a Nate Causey base hit.
The game would travel all the way to the 12th inning before the Canadians tacked on one run to take the victory by a final score of 5-4.
The Hawks (15-26) and the Canadians (17-24) will face off tomorrow night for game two of this five game series. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
Notes: Jack Wynkoop got the start and pitched five scoreless innings, giving up one unearned run on just one hit… Hamlet Marte went 5 for 6 with two doubles, three singles and two RBI… The Hawks stole four bases to bring their NWL leading total to 92… The Hawks stranded a season high 17 base runners.
